Community resources & support groups

Are you experiencing challenges with something in your life but you don’t know where to turn? Below is a list of hotlines, websites and support groups that you can contact to get help for yourself or a loved one related to alcoholism, domestic violence, drug abuse, local community services, mental health, traumatic events/natural disasters and suicide prevention.

**Remember, if you are in crisis or considering suicide, or if you or someone you know is currently in danger, please call 911 immediately.**

Alcoholism/alcohol abuse

  • Alcoholics Anonymous
    A group of recovering alcoholics who meet regularly to help each other stay sober. Membership is open to anyone who wants to do something about their drinking problem.
  • American Addiction Centers, DrugAbuse.com
    Provides detailed information about substance use support groups for the individual and their family members – the types of groups that are available, benefits of joining and frequently asked questions – as well as links to find a group near you.

Community services

  • Aunt Bertha
    Search for free or reduced-cost services like medical care, food, job training and more.

Domestic violence

Drugs/opioid abuse

  • American Addiction Centers, DrugAbuse.com
    Provides detailed information about substance use support groups for the individual and their family members – the types of groups that are available, benefits of joining and frequently asked questions – as well as links to find a group near you.
  • Narcotics Anonymous
    A group of recovering addicts who meet regularly to help each other stay clean. Membership is open to anyone for whom drugs has become a major problem and who have a desire to stop using.

Mental health

  • National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Helpline, (800)950-6264
    Helpline operates Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Eastern. Dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness. Offers support groups nationwide.
  • Mental Health America (MHA)
    Offers a resource page that includes links to local MHA support groups as well as a comprehensive listing of national support groups, other helpful resources and national, toll-free 24-hour hotlines on a variety of topics.

Natural disasters, traumatic events and crisis situations

  • American Red Cross
    Delivers vital services – from providing relief and support to those in crisis, to helping you be prepared to respond in emergencies. Includes links to find local shelters and other resources.
  • MagellanHealth.com/CrisisCommunications
    Provides tip sheet resources and direct links to various topics on Ready.gov to help prepare/respond to many different crisis situations.
